Special Features of Morningside School

Special Features

Environmental Education

We pride ourselves on the ongoing environmental development around our school.

Our "Tribute to Tane" environmental project was established in 2006 and involved the clearing of an unkempt overgrown corner of the school and students planting and caring for a variety of Native trees and shrubs. In August 2006 we received a Northland Regional Council Environmental Award for this project.

The school's revamped Worm Farm which is run by Year 5 - 6 children is another component of the Tribute to Tane project. Monitors collect left-over lunches and feed the worms each afternoon. Senior Pupils are also developing the marketing of "worm juice" - a potent fertiliser and the compost additive. The path to the worm farm is lined with painted rocks... one by each student enrolled in the school at that time.

During the first term of 2009, junior students developed a "Butterfly Garden" beside the original planted area and senior students began planting a second corner of the school.

Satellite Classes

An important feature of our school is the two Satellite Classes. These students with special learning needs are enrolled at Blomfield Special School, and are hosted by Morningside School. Their website can be visited at www.blomfield.school.nz

Blomfield's teaching and support staff design and deliver the specialist programmes for students in Rooms 5 and 6. Opportunities for students to work in the mainstream classrooms are provided during the school day.

Our school culture fosters an atmosphere of support and respect for all people in our school community, regardless of their level of ability or mobility.
